Mountain Navigation for Photographers

Learn the skills you need to navigate safely and confidently during the summer in Britain’s awe-inspiring mountains. This practical outdoor workshop will teach you about map reading, how to use a compass and route planning. During the day we will look at:

  • Maps, scales and symbols
  • Grid references
  • Understanding contour lines
  • Measuring distance, pacing and timing
  • The compass, setting the map, taking and walking on a bearing
  • Route planning – hand rails, catching features, attack points & aiming off
  • Using the map to plan for better photographs
  • Open access and ‘where you’re allowed’
  • Navigating in bad weather and poor visibility
  • Emergency procedures

No navigation experience is needed, although experience of some summer hill walking and familiarity with an Ordnance Survey map would be useful. Fitness for a day of hill walking is required.

This one day mountain navigation for photographers course will last approximately 7-8 hours and will include a limited amount of time for photography.

The Mountain Navigation for Photographers course can be booked on a date to suit you and costs £180 (see the one-to-one details below).

The Mountain Navigation for Photographers course is also available on fixed dates.  On these courses the group size is deliberately kept small, maximum 3, so there will be plenty of 1 to 1 time and ample opportunity to ask questions. The small group course will cost £90pp.

The next available dates are –

Lake District (Borrowdale) 21st September 2020 (click to book)

Lake District (Langdale) 26th September 2020 (click to book)

Courses take place in the Lake District and course details will be e-mailed after booking.

If you want to practice your navigation and consolidate your new found skills than our Escape and Create days provide an ideal opportunity – as the saying goes “practice makes perfect.” Escape and Create Mountain Photography days are available on the 8th September (Langdale) and 12th September (Langdale)

If you need help with accommodation please let us know. We can help you arrange this.

Young people under the age of 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Please contact us for further details, check availability or discuss specific dates and requirements.

One-to-one Mountain Photography

Are our group dates unsuitable for you? Would you prefer to learn on your own? Do you have a specific location in mind? Then why not book a one-to-one mountain navigation for photographers course at a time and location of your choice. Your one-to-one workshop will be tailored to your specific requirements, skill level and interest. A full day one-to-one workshop in the Lake District costs £180. If you would like to increase the number of days providing more time to learn, practice and consolidate your new skills extra days can be included at £160 each. If you book a one-to-one day and would like to bring along a friend than each additional photographer will cost £100. On one-to-one days early and late starts are available providing access to the magic hours when the light is at its best and the most stunning images can be captured. Why not include some night time photography and learn to photograph the stars, milky way and if you get the timing right a meteor shower. Returning in the dark provides a fantastic opportunity to test your new navigation skills – but please remember to bring a head torch.

A range of accommodation is available in the Lake District and we are happy to help organise this. You could also consider booking a wild camping and  photography course on a one-to-one basis. This is especially enjoyable and beneficial in the summer when the sun sets late and rises early. Please visit our wild camping and photography page for more details.

If you wish to explore an area outside of the Lake District please contact us by e-mail or phone for an informal chat about your requirements.

One-to-one workshops make memorable gifts. If you book a one-to-one workshop as an inspirational gift or for a special occasion you will be provided with a downloadable voucher containing details of the day.

Please e-mail your preferred dates to book your day(s) and arrange payment.
